Highline Benefit Gala
For the High Line Benefit Gala, Montgomery Studios worked with Van Wyck to design a hanging fabric installation that drew from the movement, softness, and public intimacy of laundry suspended in the city.
The project was inspired by a memory of the designer’s father describing laundry day as one of his favorite urban experiences: walking down the street and seeing fabric billowing from windows, fire escapes, and clotheslines. Like the High Line itself, the installation reflected a particular story of New York, one made from everyday gestures, suspended materials, shared air, and the quiet beauty of things moving above the street.
Layers of hanging fabric created a spatial atmosphere of softness, motion, and collective memory. The work transformed the event environment into a field of drifting textiles, recalling both domestic ritual and urban spectacle while honoring the ways ordinary materials can hold personal and civic meaning.
